Good afternoon, Newville:
This is a condensed version of an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer which featured Cubby O'Brien:
Is it possible that sweet little Cubby O'Brien is now playing drums with the touring company that brings West Side Story to Music Hall this weekend? Does his mother (who knit sweaters for all the boy Mouseketers) know what he's doing?
Acutually, O'Brien's parents can be proud of their son, one of the few Mouseketeers whose on-air talents opened doors to the entertainment world after The Mickey Mouse Club went off the air in 1959.
"I was lucky. I had music and drumming. Some of the kids had problems with their careers because they were Mouseketeers, but that's all," said O'Brien, 50, in a recent telephone interview from his home in Carrollton, Texas, that he shares with his second wife, a former flight attendent turned businesswoman. He has a 25-year-old daughter who recently earned her Directors Guild Card.
At 16, O'Brien went on the road with the Spike Jones Band. Later, he became a personal drummer for Ann-Margret, Olivia Newton John, Debbie Reynolds, Juliet Prowse, Diana Ross, Joel Grey, Bernadete Peters, Lena Horne, Andy Williams, and Shirley MacLaine, among other big names.
One of O'Brien's most poignant memories involves being the drummer for the Carpenters. In the early 1970s, O'Brien was asked to go on tour with the brother/sister act. That enabled Karen, the group's drummer, to sing in the spotlight.
"The drums were a crutch to Karen. She hated being out front. For the first year we doubled on drums and she'd sing once in a while. Finally she got the feeling of being in front of a microphone," recalled O'Brien.
O'Brien also has on-staff credits to his name, including The Carl Burnett Show and The Jim Nabors Show.
If O'Brien has one special goal, it's to play for susperstar Bette Midler.
That, and to find his old drums.
