In the August 2 1976 People magazine, John Bettis (co-writer with Richard) says the song is "autobiographical for all three of us."
Basically, Mr Guder is based on Richard's boss when he used to play in the "Coke Corner" in Disneyland before they made it big. His job was to play some little dittys for the visitors. However Richard got a little bored with some of the tunes he was playing so he decided to jazz them up a little and play tunes of his own. Needless to say the boss got a little upset with Richard for this and inevitably fired him. So Mr. Guder is really a tongue in cheek dig at his old boss.
So I'm led to believe anyway. Thats what Richard said in a concert.
