Paul Gambaccini provided these liner notes for the CD release:
It happens sometimes. Occasion, performer and reception unite to create an evening memorable for artist and audience alike.
Two of the most memorable evenings in the career of Elton John, one from each of his home countries, have been captured for all of us to share. The May, 1974 Royal Festival Hall Invalid Children's Aid Society Benefit in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret was suitably proper, with Elton introducing the program and the distinguished patrons holding their enthusiasm in reserve. The Thanksgiving Concert in New York's Madison Square Garden six months later was in contrast a holiday celebration of rock-and-roll at its most unrestrained, with everybody in the building letting themselves go as if they were turkeys thankful they had been spared.
For the London concert Elton chose to present the history of Elton John. This sequence has been edited by Gus Dudgeon for one side of this album. Elton began the show on stage alone, greeting The Princess and introducing his solo Skyline Pigeon. Original band members Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson joined him for Border Song, while guitarist Davey Johnstone was soon added, as he was in 1972, for Honky Cat. Lesley Duncan, the British singer composer who remains the only songwriter outside the band to be represented on an Elton John studio album, augmented the quartet for her Love Song from Tumbleweed Connection. Ray Cooper sat in for one of his earliest live appearances, providing duck calls and congas for Honky Cat and organ on Crocodile Rock. The select on-lookers clapped politely.
No audience can show its excitement like an American crowd, and the 20,000 fans lucky enough to have secured tickets for that November night in Madison Square Garden roared from the very opening notes of Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding. On the uniquely American holiday these thousands were witness not only to Kiki Dee's opening act but Ray Cooper's first New York appearance with the Elton John Band.
Giants were walking the earth. The area, 5 floors above ground to begin with, seemed to take off. When the crowd stomped to rockers like Bennie And The Jets and Take Me To The Pilot, limousines backstage bounced up and down as if clumsily attempting the bump. When Elton sang ballads like Rocket Man to the light of a thousand matches, an ethereal tranquillity descended on the hall. Elton himself was so moved he cried.
It happens sometimes. If you weren't there, you are now.
Gus Dudgeon was interviewed by Circus magazine about making this album.

US MAGAZINE - Rock Around The World
Article: The Rest Is Up To Him

BOOK - The One Who Writes The Words For Elton John by Bernie Taupin
The July 6 1976 issue of Circus magazine had this to say:
- Bernie Taupin: The 0ne Who Writes The Words For Elton John (Knopf, $6.95) contains the complete lyric output of one of this century's best lyricists. It traces his art from 1968 up to the lyrics of all the songs contained on Elton's Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road. Comprising some 117 song-lyrics, which includes not only all the words to those already recorded tracks by Taupin's famous partner, the big book also contains an extra taste of 23 pieces still unrecorded, and the complete contents of Bernie's own solo album, (on Elektra).
- This book is quite handsomely put together, frequently even startling in its presentation of the writer's work. It was edited by Alan Alderidge (who should be well remembered for his editing of both the Beatles's Illustrated Lyrics books) and Mike Dempsey. There are some 69 illustrations, collages, and photographs, on facing pages to the texts, executed by such well-known luminaries as John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, Alice Cooper, Peter Blake (who did the Sgt. Pepper album cover for the Beatles), Charlie Watts (of the Rolling Stones), Ringo Starr, and one Humphrey Ocean.
- There's a jolly little Forward to the whole package by Elton, which is not the least of the revealing surprises here. It's really an enjoyable, splendid addition to the shelves of those truly interested in owning as complete a library of the most indispensable literature of Pop.
