Reviews:
- Rolling Stone (2 stars = fair) by Jim Farber
- "BUYING AN ELTON JOHN ALBUM these days
is like investing in a mutual fund: You won't get a huge payoff, but you
probably won't get burned either."
- "...audiences buy into John's work at
this point for a familiar sense of craft, not for stinging
creativity."
- "...finds him reasonably spry despite having received the
music biz's approximation of a gold watch: last year's useless tribute album,
TWO ROOMS, plus a terrific box set. The new album
boasts some hooks sharp enough to pierce our memory banks, from the amiable
"Simple Life" to the Philly-soul-inspired "On Dark Street".
- "And yet there's not a one that couldn't have been helped
out by more pointed production. As with John's releases for
more than a decade, there's so much echo on THE ONE
that emotion desolves into oblivion."
- "Even a promising contry honk like "Whitewash County"
loses its very real shot at recalling TUMBLEWEED
CONNECTION."
- "...ultimately best remembered not for its music but for
the first-ever cover shot of Elton's hair weave."

Release of 14 CDs on the Polygram label that were formerly on MCA. All
albums are from the UK masters as well as 12-24 page booklets; save for
Greatest Hits I & II which have fewer than 12
pages. Polygram already is the record company for these albums in the rest of
the world.
PolyGram acquired the rights to these albums when it acquired
DJM records and it's This Record Company Ltd. subsidiary. DJM & This (now
part of PolyGram) had leased the albums to MCA since in the early seventies
because it had no distribution in North America. That's different now as
Polygram has a large distributiuon system. MCA's lease expired this year.
Albums released on the Rocket label in the UK (Blue
Moves and 1978's A Single Man and
forward) are still on MCA for now.
