From the press conference...
Elton John was one of the high-profile faces at the launch of the Live 8 concert. He laid out the reasons he was so pleased to be taking part, 20 years after performing at the historic Live Aid:
"I'm glad to be here in general because when the Live Aid concert happened 20 years I was pretty much a self-obsessed drug addict.
And although I was really pleased to part of a great day I really wasn't adult enough or mature enough to realise the full consequences of what were doing then.
Since then, of course, I have been 15 years sober and clean and I think I have grown up and matured a bit and started my own Aids charity and have been in a huge battle to help Aids patients ever since.
And of course those two things are tied into together very much so.
I went to Africa in January and saw for myself the situation there and saw the ignorance and stigma that people are fighting against. And I'm just very proud to be involved in something.
Musicians are kind of like Pied Pipers in this respect, and now I'm really aware or what is going and the injustices that are happening and the anger that we get from seeing it.
Just a simple turning over of money is not as simple as that because you have got corrupt governments to deal with and everything.
And we have so much ignorance that we are fighting like South Africa, we have the president of South Africa saying that Aids is caused by poverty. I wish!
I don't have much to say except that I'm extremely honoured to be around to play this concert because it means so much more to me know that it did.
It may sound ridiculous but it really does mean a lot more to me now because I'm fully aware of the situations having become involved in fundraising and trying to combat poverty and ignorance through the Aids Foundation.
I know all the musicians taking part are the creme de la creme. Since Live Aid, musicians have really stepped up to the plate, like Bono, Bob's always been there.
The reason I'm here today is that Bob Geldof asked me to do something. I would go on a dangerous mission with Bob, I trust him with my life.
He's an honourable, honourable man and I admire so much for what he is doing here.
I think he encouraged, through Live Aid 20 years ago, musicians to really think about what they should be doing instead of just playing and driving around in flash cars."

PRESS RELEASE - Elton John Extends Las Vegas Show

Elton John will extend his show, The Red Piano, at Caesars Palace through 2008, the performer said.
Elton had originally committed to do 75 shows over a three-year period beginning February 2004. But the hotel-casino accelerated the performance schedule due to demand, completing it in less than 18 months.
"We are delighted with the runaway success of The Red Piano and Elton's agreement to extend his association with Caesars," Caesars Palace President Mark Juliano said in a statement on June 15, 2005.
The agreement calls for another 150 shows through 2008 at the 4,100-seat Colosseum theater built for Celine Dion.
In 2003, Dion began a three-year engagement at the Colosseum, performing about 200 shows a year. Her run at Caesars has been extended into 2007.
The Red Piano, directed and designed by David LaChappelle, appears at the theater when Dion's show is dark. Last year, Elton's show grossed over $40 million with one of the priciest tickets around at an average of $158 each.

UK SINGLE - Ghetto Gospel - 2Pac

A reworked version of the song enters the UK charts at #1. This version features Elton John.

Elton John was amazed when Eminem played him the version for the first time, because he thought the track impossibly inventive.

Eminem mixed Elton John's vocals from his 1971 song Indian Sunset with the lost song by the late rapper Tupac Shakur.

Ghetto Gospel ended up giving Shakur his first ever UK number one single.

Elton says, "It was a piece of luck. But, when you have been around as long as I have, things just have a way of happening.

"It is incredible what Eminem's actually done, combining melody and great hip-hop in an original way.

"It is not a lazy piece of work."

WORLD CONCERT - Live 8, Hyde Park London England

  1. +The Bitch Is Back
  2. +Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)
  3. +Children Of The Night - Elton John & Pete Doherty

Announced on June 1, a worldwide concert to be held in five cities on this date. Elton John and the band played a twelve minute set in Hyde Park, London. The finale was Marc Bolan's Children Of The Revolution, sung by Pete Doherty of the band Babyshambles.

Backstage, Elton John said he is planning on recording a Christmas song with Joss Stone later in July. Elton said that as well as the new song with Joss, he is also recording with BB King, Patti LaBelle and will perform a tribute to the late Luther Vandross.

On August 4, the contactmusic.com website reported that Sir Elton John has slammed last month's star-studded London Live 8 concert, complaining it was a huge disappointment which lacked quality acts and "a sense of occasion".
His duet of T-Rex's Children Of The Revolution with troubled rocker Pete Doherty was panned by many critics as the worst performance of the day. But he insists he was not the only performer to let down fans at the Hyde Park concert, but feels it was impossible to repeat the celebrated spectacle of the original 1985 Live Aid, which he also played at.
He fumes, "I was very pleased to be a part of it, but I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as the first one. How could it be? The thought behind it was fantastic but Hyde Park is a charisma-free zone. There was no sense of occasion and from a musical point, I didn't think there were too many highlights. Pete was a mess. I don't the people around him set a good example, which is a shame."
Elton also commented, "I think Pete's immensely talented. He came to Watford and we rehearsed it and it was absolutely tip-top, perfect. I have to be very discreet about what I say, but I just think he was really nervous on the day."

Re-release of the original Peachtree Road album with three bonus tracks featuring songs from the musical Billy Elliot.

Elton John is disappointed his 2004 album Peachtree Road was only modestly successful, but accepts people may just be tiring of him after nearly four decades in the music business. The singer received decent reviews for Peachtree Road, with many writers hailing it as a return to his 1970s form, but the flattering write-ups didn't transfer into huge sales. He says, "It is probably one of my lowest-selling albums of all time. It was disappointing everywhere in the world, so I have to hold my hands up and accept that the songs just didn't connect. I'm proud of Peachtree but, if I think about it logically, people may have 10 or 12 Elton John albums in their collection already. Do they really need another one?"

Jul 19 2005Peachtree Road Deluxe Edition CD

UK CD & DVD - Peachtree Road Deluxe Collectors CD

Re-release of the original Peachtree Road album with three bonus tracks featuring songs from the musical Billy Elliot. Also includes a bonus DVD containing 9 Peachtree Road songs recorded live at The Tabernacle, Atlanta, USA, November 4 & 5 2004. Note this DVD plays on both PAL and NTSC systems!
Bernie Taupin contributed the follwoing liner notes to this edition:
"The Natchez Trace is a long slow road winding through the heart of the Old South. Peachtree Road is its urban counterpart, a humming artery snaking through modern day Atlanta. Though the two differ in their polar opposite settings both are kindred spirits in what they represent, both hold a key to musical tradition.
One is the old, fabled and full of mystical power, the place where Muddy Waters soaked up the sounds of the mythical Charley Patton and Elvis worshiped the soaring tenor of Jake Hess. It's where Ray Charles turned Country Music into soul and George Jones kept Country music honest.
The other is where those influences flourish kept alive in clubs and churches, in the voices of choirs and artists cutting their teeth on the legacy of Little Richard, Al Green and Booker T.
This album was written and recorded with these inspirations fully in place. When we began we were at odds with our direction, slightly unfocused we were rescued by the obvious. Here influence hung in the air like the moss on the trees and the humidity in the air. Between the music we grew up worshipping and with its lasting legacy still in our hearts it wasn't hard to see the light and follow the muse. We are indebted to all the musical giants aforementioned, for in our own way all are represented here no matter how slight or obvious. This is our South, this is our Reconstruction."

US CD - Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy - Deluxe Edition
Island/UMe

Elton John's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy celebrates its 30th anniversary with an expanded deluxe edition release and commmorative September 2005 concert dates.

Originally released on May 19 1975, it was the first album to debut on the Billboard album charts at #1 and in fact debuted at #1 on all three recognized charts of the era (Billboard, Cash Box and Record World).

The certified triple platinum album was the pinnacle of Elton John's career at the time and covered, in an autobiographical fashion, the first almost 30 years of the lives of Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin. It was their first genuine concept album, Bernie wrote the lyrics chronologically according to the events in their lives, Elton then wrote the music to the songs in the same order and producer Gus Dudgeon recorded them chronologically as well.

Elton will commemorate the event not only with the release of the expanded, two-CD Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy - Deluxe Edition (Island/UMe) on September 13, 2005, but also by performing a series of historic sold-out concerts on September 16 and 17 at TD Banknorth Garden, Boston and September 21, 23 and 24 at Madison Square Garden, New York where included in the repertoire he will perform the album in its entirety for the first time in over 30 years.

Disc One includes the original full length recording of Captain Fantastic and adds bonus tracks originally issued as singles-only in 1974 and early 1975. Included is the John Lennon duet of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and Elton's rendition of the Lennon-written One Day At A Time. The Deluxe Edition also contains Philadelphia Freedom and House Of Cards (the b-side to Someone Saved My Life Tonight, making its debut on this Captain Fantastic reissue).

Disc Two of the Deluxe Edition will include, for the first time ever, the Wembley Stadium concert performance when on June 21, 1975 Elton Johnboldly debuted the freshly released Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy album in its entirety to just short of 120,000 people. In fact, it is the one and only time prior to this year's commemorative concerts that the whole album was played live. Also heard on the Deluxe Edition are Pinball Wizard and Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting which served as the Wembley Stadium encores. Elton's support acts on the memorable day included The Beach Boys, The Eagles, Rufus with Chaka Khan, Joe Walsh, and Stackridge.

Elton John comments in an introduction that he has written specifically for the Deluxe Edition, "It is ironic since we recorded this album that our lives have become the title. Bernie has become The Brown Dirt Cowboy living on a ranch in California raising Cutting horses and prize winning bulls and I have become Captain Fantastic travelling from the edge of the world to your town collecting photography and art and living a life beyond my wildest dreams."
