The basics of Vex.Net
Vex.Net was started in in 1997 with the goal of giving users a stable location to run Internet services from. We have always strived to offer specialized services that most ISPs do not offer such as our dedicated shell server.
Starting with one Solaris server we have slowly increased the number and power of our servers moving first to the open source NetBSD operating system and then to the FreeBSD system and then back to NetBSD. We now have dedicated machines for shell services, web services, email services, system database services (the user databases shares the web server) and other specialized services such as the NetTask Manager service that we offer.
Vex.Net is far from being a major ISP and that suits us. We have a small, loyal and savvy user base that we have a mutual respect for. Because of our small size we can often be more agile in the specialized services that we offer.
Vex.Net offers many services, some traditional and others not usually offered by ISPs. Some of our services include:
- Web hosting
- Domain registration and management
- Dial up Internet access
- ADSL Internet access
- Email services including spam control
- Full virtual management
- Database access (MySQL or PostgreSQL)
- Data backup
- Custom programming (through Vex Consulting)
- Online task management service (NetTask Manager)
- Virtual ISP
- Network consulting services
Vex.Net has two mailing lists for keeping clients up to date. We require that every client join one or the other of these lists. The first is the MOTD list. This list is only for announcements from Vex.Net and does not allow for discussions. As a result it is a very low volume list.
The other is the Vex-Talk list. This gets all the announcements from Vex.Net that the MOTD list gets but allows for members to post as well. Discussions on this list range from highly technical, general questions to fellow Vexians and social discussions.
If you have multiple users under your account we only require one user, the group leader, to be subscribed. Other user may subscribe if they wish. There is a place on the control panel to make that selection.
