Have you tried running NEWGROUP on the deleted newsgroups to add the
newsgroup back into your AREAS, then running REBUILD to put them back
in the history? This should let you go back in, mark them as read,
expire them and finally RMGROUP the offending newsgroup(s). Sounds
like a lot of trouble, but if there is a lot of space tied up in these
messages, it may be worthwhile. I haven't actually tried this, just
sounds like it might work. It might save having to delete all the
messages in your database.
