Corrupted zip?

Your comments on the following problem will be gratefully appreciated.

About 3 times in the last 2 months I have lost, or nearly lost, a whole
batch of incoming messages and articles. This occurrence is accompanied
by:

1. The download package is larger than usual, perhaps 250 kB.

2. The down.zip file is created on my Unix host following the commands
"uqwk +n +x +L -B0" and "zip -m down.zip AREAS *.MSG" by processes that
appear normal.

3. The download is aborted before completion. If restarted (Z-modem),
the download completes.

4. The down.zip file cannot be unpacked by IMPORT.EXE or by
UNZIP or PKUNZIP.

5. PKZIPFIX creates a new zip file that is also not unpackable and is
claimed to lack a directory.

6. The file list in down.zip can be viewed normally by the viewer in
Wolfgang Sarp's disk manager program (a clone of Norton designed for
OS/2).

7. The individual files can be viewed by Sarp's program; one of them is
much larger than the others and concludes with a mail message, the body
of which looks a little like uuencode "garbage."

What is the most likely explanation for the trouble, and is there a
way to convert the down.zip file to one that IMPORT recognizes? Many
thanks.
