There is a program called YTSG which will do this, however it won't work
with Yarn .90 news base. PLEASE write Richard Curry (trindflo@fishnet.net),
the author, and ask him to update it for yarn .90 format. It would not be
hard to update. He needs just a bit more encouragement. (-:

If you are using OS/2 by any chance I have scripts in the rexx portion of
my web page which will run Expire on a search pattern (similar to wildcard),
or run expire on all groups EXCLUDING wildcard-like pattern (i used to use
this for a while to exclude expiring a couple of newsgroups which i wanted
to catch up on while expiring all the others).

Speaking of os/2 scripts while i'm advertising... (-: Too bad that user
asking about Newsrc sort isn't using OS/2... I have a nice newsrc script on
my page as well. It not only just sorts but supports specifying patterns of
newsgroups to absolutely keep at the top of the list and/or the bottom of
the list. I use it to keep all my newsgroups sorted but keep my list.*
groups at the top, and keep a couple that I download but rarely read down
at the bottom...

Ok, so much for advertising. Write Richard Curry so he will upgrade his
great util soon! (-; Everyone else reading this write him as well. Heheh.
Come to think about it it's soon time i fanatically started annoying him
about it again myself... mmmm.
