Souper does not handle authentication on an NNTP server.
I have the same problem and use uqwk 1.8 as a workaround. Setup was
relatively easy except for the inews path which I had to ask for.
If you have a shell account, you can give this a try.
I have a SMTP host on my host system which I have not tried. Can anyone
tell me if Souper will do authentication on a SMTP server?
...Has anyone written an NNTP authentication routine for souper?
