After some consultation with other Netcom users, three possibilities
were suggested:

- Extremely long lines in the .newsrc

- An active-high-count greater than some value which breaks trn

- A corrupt thread database.

Experimentation suggests that it's the third of these. I'm going to
try trnkill with the '-Zo' switch, to force it to read the overview
file instead of the thread file -- will update.

(a few minutes later) Seems to work just fine.
