Shrinking NEWS.DAT?

I subscribed to a new news group that turned out to
be high volume (some thing I normally avoid) it grew my
NEWS.DAT file to over 30 Meg. How do I get it back down to
some thing more in the 'normal' (for me) range?

A point that I've not seen addressed in any of the
discussion on the hugh one fill fits all idea is doing
backups:

I do a backup of changed files each day, and there
is a *BIG* difference in backing up the old style of files
(V89 and before where each set of messages was in its own
new file) and backing up a 30 Meg file to a tape drive a
couple of times a day....

If yarn is going to be staying this way, can you
point me to a context DIFF that you trust will work on
hugh binary files?
