To retrieve news only, use:

uqwk +n -m +L +x -B0

The options:
+n means: get news;
-m means: do not get mail;
+L means: use SOUP format;
+x means: download crossposted articles only once;
-B0 means: no limit to size of packet.

This will leave your mail untouched. All unread news will be
downloaded in one packet.
