Try this:
-1 from: john@
the colon is the important part. The scoring feature uses that to
know what part of the line you want to score on.
Another thought is to kill on the xref: line especially if "john" has
a "home newsgroup" or one that he includes in all posts.
such as
-1 xref: alt.test
Most of the truly obnoxious on usenet have such groups.
