There are a couple of things you can do to shorten the learning curve
and make things a lot easier as far as setting up the offline reader
system.
You should visit Kevin Martin's web site:

You'll find complete information about setting up software on your PC
and on the ISP's system, depending on the type connection you have.
There are links to all the software mentioned below, and examples of
scripts for both ends to automate things.
Uqwk can be a headache to set up, so you're lucky to have cooperation from
your ISP. But if you're using a ppp connection, you can bypass uqwk
altogether and use one of the applications - souper, vsoup, etc. - that
will gather your mail and news from the host and create the files on
your PC that yarn needs.
If uqwk gets up and running, you can use OLMenu to automate things on
the ISP's end, unless you just want to write your own script. OLMenu is
a shell script that provides a menu-based front-end for uqwk.
