I must admit I find this part of YARN confusing. For example, how
far east of greenwich before it becomes west? Over the dateline in
the middle of the Pacific? Here I sit in Japan, and can't figure
out what my TZ should be.

Lets go around the globe from Greenwich going West:
Greenwich TZ=0
New York TZ=
For California TZ=
For Hawaii TZ=
(passing the Intl date line now, between Hawaii & Jpn, is this now
East of Greenwich?
For Japan TZ=
For Calcutta TZ=
For Turkey TZ=
For Prague TZ=
(and now back to Greenwich)

Somebody care to fill in the details for us? (especially that JPN)
