Is there a uqwk substitute?

Hi, occasionally, I have problems sending mail messages with uqwk. The
entire process just seems to hang and no matter how long I wait, nothing
happens. Also, it takes forever to retrieve news as our news is obtained
from a NNTP server outside our network. Is there a version of UQWK later
than 1.8, or another such software package which might speed things up?

Any help appreciated.
