I think you are thinking of the %yarn%\active file, not the newsrc file.
You can indeed edit the active file, but you should use the newgroup
command instead:

[C:\os2apps\yarn]newgroup
PC Yarn version 0.92
Add/change active newsgroup
usage: newgroup name keepDays [[maxDays] moderator]

The newsrc file just contains lists of read articles by article number.
