To use score files with mailing lists, you must filter them into what
are called pseudo-newsgroups instead of into folders. Sounds like you've
figured out the filter program already, all you need to do as do a
newgroup command for each pseudo-newsgroup you want to create. For
instance, if you have a filter rule that sends info from this mailing
list to a folder named yarnfold, change the rule to say something like
list.yarn instead of yarnfold and do the following at a dos prompt:
newgroup list.yarn 30 90 yarn-list@lists.colorado.edu
Check the yarn doc for a description of the parameters. The mailing
address at the end is needed only if you will be posting messages to
the list.
Now any mail that triggers your filter rule will get copied into a
'newsgroup' instead of a folder and you can use score files on it.
If you don't see the newsgroups you create at yarns newsgroup selection
menu, press <Insert> and select them. Your only problem now is that
you can't just delete news the way you can delete messages in folders,
you have to run the expire program (see the yarn doc).

prjr, can I ask how you go about using yarn on mailing lists now?
Normally you would already be using uqwk to do so...you just have to
set up a .newsrc file and tell uqwk that you want news also.
Your menus have a read newsgroups option which seems to run a program
called tin for reading usenet. You should be able to use this to
select ("subscribe") to the particular newsgroups you want to see in
yarn. After you have done this, do NOT follow the freenet's instructions
about purging your news index file after every time you read news :).
I logged in to your freenet.npiec.on.ca as a guest user to try to check
how the menu system runs uqwk, but was unable to find the uqwk send and
receive options you mention. You may need to get someone else to set
this up for you. To run uqwk to get news for yarn, you must run it
with the +n (do news) and +L (use SOUP format) options. Then run zip
to bundle the AREAS and *.MSG files uqwk creates into a single package
which you can download. Getting the people who run your freenet to get
the olmenu script someone else mentioned would probably be your best
bet.
Good luck.
And remember, with freenets you get what you pay for.
