Yarn 0.92 is quietly deleting my newsgroups

My first installation of Yarn, version 0.68, worked so well for nearly
three years I wasn't in any hurry to upgrade. I just got around to
upgrading to version 0.92, but now when I try to look at a newsgroup, Yarn
simply blanks out the article-count!

To upgrade, I replaced all the executables in my YARN directory with the
new ones from 0.92 and added the new ones ( rebuild , cvt09 , etc.) but
left my $HOME\CONFIG file alone. The cvt09 program ran fine, with only
one error-message (about an article missing a Message-ID header). Before
running full yarn I tested things with just yarn -m ; everything looked
o.k. there, even when I wrote a short reply.

So I tried to read news, but the program hung (newsgroup selection list
showing) when I tried to read the first newsgroup. After breaking out
back to DOS, I ran chkdsk /f , which found a corrupted file (copy of an
old folder I was keeping in \YARN). I then ran rebuild -h , which
returned this rather disconcerting report:

Article at offset 8842334 has size 544500000. Skipped 9095 bytes.
Article at offset 8916969 has size 757935405. Skipped 10683 bytes.

{ I tried to stanch the hemorrhaging here , but rebuild persisted! -G.R.}
Skipped 29599 bytes.
Article at offset 10148711 has size 2003136032. Skipped 1578 bytes.
Article at offset 10215829 has size 1818851951. Skipped 1773 bytes.

Article at offset 10349958 has size 1869029476. Skipped 252 bytes.

Disregarding that ominous report, I returned to the newsreader, where Yarn
began wiping out newsgroups!

The only (other) thing I can think of that might be the problem is that my
0.68-version newsbase had some articles going back two and three years,
and Yarn 0.92 for some reason is "expiring" older articles.

Apparently everything in three newsgroups is lost now, and I'm afraid to
run Yarn any more.

What's wrong, and what can I do to fix it?
