MIME - UUE

I stumbled upon a rather strange situation. I sent a binary
file to a fellow Yarn user. I told Yarn (0.92) to attach a
file, and it was encoded in MIME. The recipient of this e-mail
wondered why I sent him a MIME-encoded message, when Yarn only
incorporates UUE-decoding (he uses 0.91). Come to think of it:
didn't Yarn use UUE-encoding in its versions prior to 0.92? Has
MIME-encoding become the default now? If so, why?
