uqwk 1.8 problems?

My ISP just installed the latest and greatest version of uqwk, 1.8
and it sends all the *.MSG files into the bit bucket. At least, news
never gets written to disk. It does something odd to .newsrc too,
sort of updating the pointers but not quite, leaving from 1 to 7
posts in each newsgroup marked as unread.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Do you happen to know what the
fix is? Nobody at my ISP actually *uses* uqwk, so they just installed
it without testing. If I've got to wait for them to sift through the
source code looking for the problem, it might take weeks for them to
get it fixed.
