The DOS version of yarnpack is very limited in it's memory capacity.
It can only handle about 16,000 messages maximum. (If you have NNIGN
you can use that to tell you how many articles (used blocks) you have,
but you'll have a lot more than 16,000 in a 72 meg file. I have about
4636 messages in my current 11 meg news.dat, for example -- of course
it depends how many in that 72 megs are expired as well.)
>Is there something I can do or should I just delete the news.dat and start
>importing new news ???
If you have disk space you can REBUILD -S, but be aware that this will
mark all the remaining unexplired messages as UNREAD.
Other POSSIBLE alternative is to mark even more messages read and keep
doing EXPIRE -R until you have less than 16,000 messages, and enough
memory for DOS yarnpack to operate. This is not guarenteed however.
Yarnpack is rather picky and tries to always err on the side of
caution, and a lot of times is upset that to find the history.pag has
extra entries -- i still haven't solved that problem. Yarn seems to
not mind that condition and will clear it up itself eventually, but
Yarnpack doesn't know what is going on being a 'reverse engineered'
hack... with no official knowledge of how the history.pag extactly
works!).
