Perfectily good command file snipped

Couple of things to try, set max-keep to 12 and/or a shorter expire time.
BTW, you do run expire daily?

Not much, its just that say 200 messages a day x 4k (WAG of average post
size) = 800K per day, x 30 = 24 M per month. However the kicker is that
at no time all the posts 30 days or 12 days old so by aggregation the
news.dat grows.

I set my keep for three days and max keep for three days, expire every
import and my news.dat runs about 5-7 megs.
