There are two different ways to compile UQWK. One way uses an NTTP
server (in which case changing that variable will work), and the other
way doesn't (it accesses news spools directly i suppose).

I'm just telling you this IN CASE changing the variable doesn't work,
so you'll then know why it didn't. Hopefully it will work for you.
Because if it doesn't your only option will be to compile your own
NNTP version of uqwk on your shell. Fun.

But since TIN works by changing it seems to indicate that your ISP's
shell is set up for access via NNTP, so just disregard everything i
said above. <-:

You need a .newsrc to be in existance before using UQWK, however not
before using TIN. I'm not sure which you are asking about in that
question. (-: I presume you use Tin to do your newsgroup management...
subscribe/unsubscribe... it should work fine if you just rename your
.newsrc and then run tin... a new one should be created.

You've probably tried this and found out for yourself by now. <-:

a pointer to kevin martin's helpful tutorial on all this stuff has
already been posted and probably will give you all the info you need.

However if you just want command line parameters for Uqwk have you
tried "man uqwk" on your shell?

This is the slightly confusing way that yarn seems to work in this
case. When you view the reply message in your "replies" folder you
should see it has a "To:" filed as well as the "Newsgroups:" field.
Don't worry, UQWK knows it's email (the REPLIES file in the reply soup
packet tells it) and sends to the To: field. The Newsgroups: field is
ignored when sending mail.
