I realise that this is an error prone method, and would be better done
by scripts. I know nothing about doing this for UNIX. But it's only a
three step process - update the local server's .newsrc backup, copy the
alternate server's backup file to .newsrc, and then change the
NNTPSERVER setting.

There were articles in the soup file, which I'd saved for checking. I
looked into the .msg portion, and found that the articles were indeed
already in my news.dat. So in fact everything is working right. I
tried it again today with a couple more newsgroups, and did get
articles imported. Now to find the holy grail - a good public access
news server. Thanks for your help.
