Often when running EXPIRE -r, it suddenly stops with the message:
Assertion failed: blk.prev + free.size + sizeof(BlockHeader) == delOffset, file
..\SPOOLFIL.CPP, line 235
ABNORMAL TERMINATION
Running Yarn reveals that the articles are still gone, but based on a
previous mistake I'm worried that the space they occupied in the
NEWS.DAT file may not be reclaimed. I may run REBUILD -s, but in the
long run, that usually makes the NEWS.DAT file *grow* rather than
shrink, as EXPIRE -o stops working for a week. I can't read
*everything*, so EXPIRE -r is not sufficient, and using Catchup on a
newsgroup empties it completely, which I don't want either.
I have some other problems with Yarn 95 as well. The Caps Lock key
behaves strangely -- shifting *every* key on the keyboard, rather than
just the letters. And saving file names with national characters won't
work.
I am tempted to return to the DOS version again, even though I'll miss
long file names (a small inconvenience compared to the loss of national
characters in file names), and shelling out and running Windows apps
works a lot more reliably now.
