I don't know if this will work, but try:
add the groups back in with newgroup,
rebuild the overview files with rebuild -o,
subscribe and catch the groups up (C in newsgroup select in yarn),
and expiring them with expire -r newsgroupname
Of course, if you've already expired everything else, you can just delete
news.dat and then run rebuild -o.
