Some other guy asked me to modify VSoup that it can download the
description. Where in the RFCs are those group descriptions mentioned?
Are they maintained on any news server?

Hardy

PS: ok, I've found the definition myself (in RFC977 Common
Extensions). That means, it is no standard (common extension) and
the last question remains: who's maintaining such a list?

If you still like to get the list from your news server, invoke
'telnet my.news.server nntp' and enter either 'list newsgroups *'
or 'xgtitle *'. Most telnet allow output redirection so one can
download it and after that easily read the hopefully contained
descriptions from the generated file (there are other telnet which
allow even input redirection which allow automation of the
process...).
