At the risk of being lambasted for mentioning a different newsreader,
I'll point out that the Forte Agent offline newsreader does all this.
First it downloads the headers. Then you mark the articles you want and
have it fetch them.

I still much prefer Yarn for discussion newsgroups and especially
listserv traffic (and I don't have much choice as long as I stick with
my gate.net shell account for email), but I recently switched to Agent
for grabbing binaries, and I am continually impressed with all it can
do.
