I've recently got a new computer, and the os is win98. My last one was
win 3.11 Thai version, and I'd been using yarn 92 with yes 22 as a
companion program - no problems whatsoever. When I installed the yarn
on the new computer it crashed the entire system every time, no matter
what property settings I tried. I visited the yarn sites and found the
special compilation for win 95. So far so good. But I'm still unable
to use metamail or my yes 22 companion program. I miss being able to
choose my sigs and tag files. Several other dos programs also seem
unable to run under this system.
The dos image viewer I was using which was called by the mailcap file
will run by itself in a dos window, but not when I try to enable it
through metamail. I also hate html in usnet posts and mail, but had
viewhtml (another dos program) set in mailcaps to pick those up, and
it was also handy for that. It will not run independently in a dos
box, let alone by metamail. I had the list program to pick up enriched
text (or whatever those are), and it will run just fine by itself. But
metamail itself seems incapable to do its job - though I fault the
operating system for this, not the program. Does anyone have any
pointers to make these things work under this supposedly "new and
improved" operating system?
I know this will tempt some criticisms of these Micro$oft systems -
it's not necessary, as I have plenty of my own already. It seems
inherently less stable than the old 3.11, but I'd really appreciate
some useful tips if there are any. If I can get metamail to work (or a
different version of it), is it possible to have it call a windows
image viewer or other windows program rather than dos programs?
I've visited all the usual yarn sites, and can't seem to find much
reference to these problems. But I'm sure happy that someone had
created a special yarn package that seems to run just fine under this
os. I've been a loyal yarn user for years (I still have a dial up
shell account) and getting usenet and mail is very convenient. I did
have a try with the Readmail program mentioned on the list several
months ago.... won't run at all. Even when I get a graphic account
(they will probably kick those of us still with shell accounts off
very soon), I'll be looking into the Vsoup/ Souper programs so I can
stay with my favourite reader.
Any advice will be highly appreciated.
Best to all,
Brian
