Yup. It's an ego thing. :-)

He said it was his first major application written in C++, and implied
that the source (and maybe some design elements) might be a bit rough
around the edges, at least in his eyes.

Particularly when Fortran hacks like me try to write C/C++. <grin>

FWIW, I have no idea how long he's been doing the clean-up, how much
time he's spending on it, or how long he thinks it might be.
