That's basically the path I took, but I ended up using OS/2.

My experience varies and I understand where you're coming from. I "just"
upgraded my hardware recently and now run a speed demon of a computer... A
166mhz pentium... ;') Life has never been better and my old 486 is now doing
server duty...
