That's what I was doing but changed to repacking the files on the
assumption that sent messages would not be included.

I had a problem with mail though. If a mail message didn't have an
"end of line" at the end of the message, it wouldn't go. So other
messages would be transmitted again. I couldn't teach my wife (nor
myself) to always put a blank line at the end but I was able to solve
the problem by configuring the editor to put an end-of-line at the end
of the file

I had a similar problem the other day. A mail message didn't go the
first time but went the second time. So presumably the other email in
the "packet" was sent again.
