Sorry to contribute to thread drift, if anyone minds this. (Even sorrier
to be posting this with Outlook Express... but that's how it is on this
machine). Some quick advice to anyone interested in the whole
Word-Virus problem: Use the freely available (as in no-cost) Word
Viewer that Microsoft provides. The Win16 version runs great on OS/2,
on my main machine. The same version should run equally well with
Win3.1, Win9x or WinNT. Of course, OS/2 makes it a lot easier to have
associations behave properly than do the Mickysoft OS's. I do not know
whether the program will manage under WINE, WABI, BOCHS, or other
Windows emulators/shells.... but chances are good. The Word Viewer has
the nice property of not supporting macros (nor allowing editing of
documents, for good or bad, depending on purposes).

Alternately, the more-or-less freely available StarOffice does a pretty
good job of reading those Word DOCs, also without the viruses (macros).
That's available on a bunch of platforms, including Linux. Of course,
downloading 30 megs just for a program to read DOCs might be excessive.
But the thing isn't bad for a lot of other things, if you need it.

Of course, best of all would be to get folks to stop sending documents
in proprietary formats at all... or at least in slightly less
proprietary formats (like Acrobat PDF).

Yours, Lulu...
