This may not help you much but I use pegasus mail for dos quite a lot, there is
a windows version that works great. If you wanted to network the two pcs
together, you could maybe have the modem on the windows computer collecting
email using mercury mail server, and let your wife use pegasus mail which gets
mercuries mail downloads, and then set up the smtp server for yourself and use
it to download using yarn through the network. This is what I do.
