I once read that text is easiest to read when it is dark on a light background. I read somewhere else that computer screens are more difficult to read if your text is black on pure white. Generally I try to stay away from black text, but I wouldn't trade my white backgrounds for anything. Many professional pages seem to like the white on black look, though, and I say more power to them. I'm sticking to white backgrounds.
