What yarn needs is more easy hooks out to external programs, all over the
place. I doubt Chin want's to put in this feature, as it sounds kind of
peculiar (in the good sense! <-: ), however wouldn't it be nice if yarn
users could define their own hot keys (function keys perhaps) that call
external programs against the current message (on the article/mail viewing
level).

This is (in a way) already implemented in yarn via the "pipe message to
program" routine. But the awkwardness of that is: who wants to actually
type the name of the program to pipe to every time. What would be nice is
definable function keys. WIth a few simple translations, like %f to pass
the current message to the external program.

At least one person does this on his own via a REXX script which is on my
yarn2/rexx web page. He hijack's the SHIFT-X "decode" fuction and instead
of running a mime program runs a menu (utilising 4os2 (4dos)) with options
on what to do with the message. One could if one desired hook other stuff
in there. (Morten Frederiksen), the author, uses it to run an "Url grabber"
to extract URLs from messages which he wants to keep. The script is called
"URLget", but could be used for just about anything.)

But user definable hot keys from yarn itself would be nicer (-:

Other hooks would be nice as well. Then hackers might put together some
more nice utils for yarn... like a nicer address book. That's another one
(-: Yarn's address book is of course functional-- but your idea makes me
think that what you REALLY need is a new addess book that supports notes,
and stuff. I myself have wanted such a beasty, so i can remember who people
are! I know, you can hack in comment about who a person is as either part
of the "alias", etc... but...

Wouldn't it be nice if yarn had an external hook here too; so if defined,
the address book is called externally. Some sort of simple interface to
communicate addresses to and from Yarn... a special temporary file...

Hmm, i've thought of lots more spots i wouldn't mind external hooks from
yarn, but non are coming to mind at the moment.

Oh one is a little more complicated... was thinking that a few user
definable options on the "send" menu (after exiting editor) would be nice!
that way the user can define there different encrypters, or pgp, or
whatever. Also a UUencode option would be nice, rather than MIME attaches
(i prefer UU myself-- though for OS/2 users YEP covers this to a limited
extent). And so on and so forth and so on!

The work is never done (-:
