That's what I do. I have a cron job that runs every morning at 5AM, it
only packs nesgroups, not mail. I sometimes get behind on mail and that's
not always a good thing <g>.
I also have a couple of other shell scripts that let me do a mail run in
the middle of the day or to include mail along with newsgroups. I usually
keep the days copies of the post around and delete them at the end of the
day. I also have it copy the newsrc files (actually, I had to split up
newsrc into 2 files -- I unpack the soup files to a RAM disk and then to
the hard disk -- this is much faster, I also use a 2 or 3 mb disk cache
(BTW, the RAM drive is 8mb!). The files are like:
cpcug1.ddx
cpcug2.ddx
Where dd is the day of the month and x is a sequnce number (first one of
the day is 0, etc.) If there is interest I'll post them for use somewhere
(I'll try for an anonymouse ftp site).
BTW, the reason there are two pieces is because of the limitations on the
number of files in the root directory.
