Multimail looks as if it would be good for someone who still has a
toe in the BBS pond or doesn't have a PPP connect.

For years I had only a shell account and used UQWK to download SOUP
packets to be read with Yarn. Then I got a PPP/shell account and used
the excellent VSOUP (thanks, Hardy!) to download SOUP packets. Some
time ago I switched to Linux and Mutt (www.mutt.org).

With all due respect and thanks to Chin (who was working alone and has
not updated Yarn for years) for his fine contribution to the online
community, there is no comparison. Mutt is feature-rich, open source,
under active development (a new release comes out about once a month)
and has two active support lists (one for users and one for
developers). In short, Mutt is what Yarn might have become if it
had gone open source years ago.

Using fetchmail with Mutt the user can either get mail continuously
or go online now and then, download mail, go offline, and read and
reply. The replies are queued by sendmail and uploaded on the next
connect. It's the best of both online and offline mail.
