I am a woman, and a feminist. I know a lot of women who are afraid
to call themselves feminists, for fear of being lumped in with the
shrill "feminists" who insist that intercourse is a "violative
abuse" and who decry pornography because they equate it to "woman
hating." It's very easy to make off-the-wall arguments like that
if you're willing to redefine your terms. I'm not. I believe in
respecting people for their individuality, being aware of privileges
gained unfairly and working to establish them for everyone, and
being responsible for oneself and one's society. The following
collection of links points to sites maintained by people who seem
to see things similarly to the way I do.
- Donna Laframboise's Web site --
Laframboise is a Canadian journalist and writer who is calling mainstream
feminism (as represented by such organizations as NOW and Ms.
magazine -- you know, the ones who get quoted when people want to know
what "the feminists" say) to task for ignoring, misrepresenting, and
even demonizing men in general and any women who disagree with them.
Her site and her book, The Princess at the Window: A New Gender
Morality, contain some provocative and fascinating stuff; if you
think feminism's been overrun by the loonies, you may find some hope here.
- Bust magazine -- they
call themselves "the voice of the New Girl Order," and they're fun and
just about fearless. Great page of links.
