Mindful Leadership Retreat
Professional Development and Certification For Educators
‘Mindfulness is defined as present moment awareness without judgement.
It can be thought of as cultivating leadership presence.’ – Janice Marturano
‘All understanding happens in the present moment’ – Thich Nhat Hanh
This March Break, we invite you to join us for a 6-day experiential professional development retreat in beautiful Montezuma, Costa Rica near the ocean. We will employ principles from eco-leadership, which recognizes the interconnectedness of life including self, nature and community; with mindful teaching practices. We will also share self-care and compassion tools to benefit you in your personal and professional lives.
Course Overview: This retreat involves experiential activities with an exploration of mindful leadership including meditation, nature, expression, movement, professional dialogue and reflection. You will leave with practical skills to use in the classroom and in the organization to support a mindful teaching practice, a manual of the key teachings and specific practices and the support of like-minded peers.
Course Format: The 6-day program is delivered in an experiential workshop setting; it consists of a daily schedule with a core topic each day and includes 35 hours of workshop time.
- daily workshops
- daily yoga and meditation
- evening readings, presentations and group discussions
- optional outdoor activities
- free time for reflection and exploration
Certificate of Completion: Successful participants receive a certificate of completion from
Living Education Institute, an Eco-Leadership Training Organization.
Learning Outcomes: The course teaches participants to
- Manage stress through a greater understanding and regulation of thoughts and emotions
- Reconnect with your sense of purpose- personally and professionally
- Develop environmental awareness and understanding of ecological literacy
- Improve overall mental and physical well-being and learn tools for self-care
- Practice techniques of mindful leadership which are applicable to your classroom and support curriculum and school-wide mental health initiatives
- Cultivate mental and physical resilience
- Engage creative solutions by becoming more comfortable with change
Thirty years of informed basic research and, more recently, neuroscience, offer strong evidence to support the use of mindfulness practices in education. Scientific studies show that mindfulness training develops one’s concentration, resilience, attention, planning, decision-making, emotional balance, compassionate action and promotes mental well-being.

Agnieszka Weclawska, B.A., B Ed, OCT
An experienced educator in the public school system since 2004, teaching in the junior, intermediate and senior divisions (English Literature, Languages, Social Sciences) as well as special programming (Alternative Education, Developmental Delay Resource, Student Success, Adult Education, International Baccalaureate and Special Education), Agnieszka has a good understanding of the quirks and possibilities that accompany the role of the classroom teacher as well as its challenges. She has international experience; in France, supporting educators as a teaching assistant at a teacher training and development institute (Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres de Toulouse) and in South Korea teaching ESL to primary students. In 2010, she embarked on a curious and experiential journey to connect body with mind; the self-inquiry led to a stronger sense of purpose and illuminated her teaching practice. Since then, she completed over 500 hours of yoga training in the Hatha and Vinyasa traditions, as well as additional training in therapeutic yoga – with special interest in pranayama (breath) practice and trauma sensitive yoga. Seeking to bridge the benefits of present moment awareness and authentic leadership with her own teaching practice- she stands ready to grow, learn, adapt, integrate and empower others.
