Senator Claiborne Pell, the former chairman of the
Foreign Relations Committee of the United States
Senate, is the son of Herbert Pell, the State
Department official who established the Sosua colony
for refugees in the Dominican Republic during World
War II. In this clip from the film Who Shall Live and Who Shall Die?, he recalls the tragic story of the
steamship St. Louis, turned away from the United
States in 1939, full of passengers seeking to escape
Hitler.
