Other Notes

In the notes to the Carpenters: The Compact Disc Collection, Richard Carpenter wrote:

With the success of Close To You and We've Only Just Begun our schedule was not quite as relaxed as it had previously been. I did not have as much time to write or listen to material. Thankfully we "lucked into" several very stong songs:
For All We Know - Karen and I were in Toronto to open the show for Englebert Humperdinck. We had one night off before opening and our manager Sherwin Bash suggested we see the film Lovers And Other Strangers. We enjoyed the film and noticed the song For All We Know which we recorded upon our return home. (It subsequently won an Oscar for Best Song of 1970).
Rainy Days And Mondays - Nichols and Williams sent a "demo" of this song to us. Two listenings and we decided it was perfect.

Superstar - I came home from the studio one nightand heard a then relattively unknown Bette Midler performing this song on the "Tonight Show". I could barely wait to arrange and record it. (It remains one of my favorites). The Carpenters album features Hideaway, a beautiful song by Randy Sparks. Randy is best known for his group The New Christy Minstrels and another of his songs: Today. Before Karen and I started our on our own, we were in a group I had formerly called Spectrum. Randy hired us (a very rare booking) to perfrom at his club "Ledbetters". He opened the show and Hideaway was one of the songs he sang. We liked it immediately and never forgot it. One Love is a song John and I wrote in 1967 while we were employed at Disneyland. Originally called Candy it was written for a waitress in "Coke Corner" who caught all four of our eyes. The album closed with a touching Felice Mancini lyric [Sometimes] written for her parents and set to music by her father, Henry.
