Other Notes
In the notes to the Carpenters: The
Compact Disc Collection, Richard Carpenter wrote:
For Karen and me, 1974 was devoted to
world-wide touring. The only recording done by us that year was Please Mr. Postman which was
released in October. Horizon differed from the
preceeding albums mostly by virtue of its production. By this time the A&M
Studios had 24 track recording. (The Ticket To Ride album was
recorded on 8 tracks and the subsequent four albums on 16 tracks). The
additional tracks allowed us to record the acoustic piano, Rhodes, drums, etc.
in stereo. I am particularly fond of I Can Dream Can't I which
features a beautiful arrangement by veteran Billy May, done in
authentic 40's style.
Reviews
From the November 1975 issue of Seventeen Magazine
Carpenters : Horizon
(A&M) The mood's a mellow mix of sun and sadness and the world's a winning
place to be, sheltered by the lovely, interweaving melodies of the
Carpenters, Richard, and sister
Karen. Her pliant vocals, just a shade on the husky side,
shape such limpid tunes as Aurora,
OnlyYesterday, and I Can Dream Can't I.
Orchestrations, mostly by Richard, who plies the keyboards
with Karen on drums, are crisp and engaging.
