Liner Notes - by Richard Carpenter & Credits
The release of Lovelines, the final
Carpenters album, commemorates the twentieth year of our
association with A&M Records. The album consists of twelve selections (10
previously unreleased) four of which are from Karen's sessions
with producer Phil Ramone and the remaining eight being sides
which Karen and I had recorded through the years.
- Lovelines
- The title cut is from Karen's solo album and was
written and arranged by Rod Temperton. Recorded in early 1980,
Lovelines at times gives Karen a chance to use her
rich lower register and alos features an impressive Fender Rhodes solo by
Greg Phillinganes.
- Rhythm & Vocal Arrangement: Rod
Temperton
- Orchestration: Bob James
- Keyboards: Greg Phillinganes
- Bass: Louis Johnson
- Drums: James Robinson
- Guitars: Eric Johns-Rasmussen &
David Williams
- Percussion: Ralph McDonald
- Backing vocals: Karen Carpenter
- Where Do I Go From Here
- A lovely Parker McGee ballad which we recorded
in 1978. This song was also recorded by Barry Manilow and
England Dan & John Ford Coley. I arranged
this version and the beautiful orchestration was penned by England's late
Peter Knight. Tony Peluso once again provides
a melodic guitar solo. This song is one of two unreleased recordings used in
The Karen Carpenter Story.
- Arranged by: Richard Carpenter
- Orchestrated by: Peter Knight
- Keyboards: Richard Carpenter
- Bass: Joe Osborn
- Drums: Ron Tutt
- Guitars: Tony Peluso
- Oboe: Earle Dumler
- The Uninvited
Guest
- This Pop/Country song is one of several Karen
and I recorded in 1980 that didn't make the Made In
America album due to lack of space. The song, with its haunting
melody and offbeat lyric, is a good vehicle for Karen.
- Arranged & Orchestrated by: Richard
Carpenter
- Keyboards: Richard Carpenter
- Bass: Joe Osborn
- Drums: Ron Tutt
- Guitars: Tim May & Tony
Peluso
- Pedal steel guitar: Jay Dee Maness
- Oboe: Earle Dumler
- Backing vocals: The O.K. Chorale
- If We Try
- Another Rod Temperton song from
Karen's album. If We Try is an intimate song made
even more so by Karen's reading.
- Rhythm & Vocal Arrangement: Rod
Temperton
- Orchestration: Rob Mounsey
- Keyboards: Greg Phillinganes
- Bass: Louis Johnson
- Drums: James Robinson
- Guitars: Eric Johns-Rasmussen &
David Williams
- Percussion: Ralph McDonald
- Backing vocals: Karen Carpenter
- When I Fall In
Love
- One of the greatest songs ever written. Victor
Young's melody to When I Fall In Love was first heard in the
1951 war film One Minute To Zero. The timeless lyric
was added by Edward Heyman and the song first became a hit
when released by Nat "King" Cole. This version was recorded in
1978 along with Little Girl Blue for our third ABC TV Special
Space Encounters. Only one ballad could be used and
Little Girl Blue worked better for the particular scene. We
subsequently featured When I Fall In Love in our 1980 Special
Music, Music, Music.
- Arranged & Orchestrated by: Peter
Knight
- Keyboards: Pete Jolly
- Bass: Joe Osborn
- Drums: Cubby O'Brien
- Harp: Gayle Levant
- Kiss Me The Way You Did Last Night
- From the 1980 Made In America sessions,
this tune remains one of my favorites and is definitely one of our more
ambitious productions. Karen and I are joined in our backing
vocals by Siedah Garrett.
- Arranged & Orchestrated by: Richard
Carpenter
- Keyboards: Richard Carpenter
- Bass: Joe Osborn
- Drums: Ron Tutt
- Guitars: Tim May
- Lead guitars: Tony Peluso
- Oboe: Earle Dumler
- Harp: Gayle Levant
- Percussion: Paulinho da Costa
- Backing vocals: Karen & Richard
Carpenter, Siedah Garrett
- Remember When Lovin'
Took All Night
- This selection from the solo project was written by John
Farrar (who produced many of Olivia Newton-John's
albums) and Molly Ann Leikin. Rod Temperton
contributed the ethereal vocal arrangement.
- Arranged & Orchestrated by: Bob James
- Vocal Arrangement: Rod Temperton
- Keyboards: Bob James & Rob
Mounsey
- Bass: Doug Stegmeyer
- Drums: Liberty Devitto
- Guitars: David Brown & Russell
Javors
- Percussion: Airto Moreira
- You're The One
- This beautiful Steve Ferguson ballad was also
recorded (sans bridge) by Jennifer Warnes. Our version was
recorded in 1977 during the Passage sessions. It was
a "flip of a coin" that decided whether You're The One or I Just
Fall In Love Again made that album. This song is also featured in
The Karen Carpenter Story. I feel You're The
One is one of Karen's finest performances.
- Arranged & Orchestrated by: Richard
Carpenter
- Keyboards: Richard Carpenter
- Bass: Joe Osborn
- Drums: Ron Tutt
- Acoustic guitar: Tim May
- Backing vocals: Karen & Richard
Carpenter
- Honolulu City
Lights
- Karen and I heard this song while vacationing in
Hawaii. It was a local hit sung by Hawaiians Keola and
Kapono Beamer and composed by the former. We liked it
immediately and recorded the song in 1978.
- Arranged & Orchestrated by: Richard
Carpenter
- Keyboards: Richard Carpenter
- Bass: Joe Osborn
- Drums: Ron Tutt
- Acoustic guitar: Tim May
- Pedal steel guitar: Jay Dee Maness
- English horn: Earle Dumler
- Harp: Gayle Levant
- Backing vocals: The O.K. Chorale
- Slow Dance
- Recorded during the same session as was Honolulu City
Lights. I heard this song on Kristy and Jimmy
McNichol's album and subsequently played it for
Karen, who loved it. It was somehow reminiscent to both of us
of a song from the sixties and though I had misgivings about the lyric being
too "young" we nevertheless recorded it. I'm glad we did.
- Arranged & Orchestrated by: Richard
Carpenter
- Keyboards: Richard Carpenter
- Bass: Joe Osborn
- Drums: Ron Tutt
- Guitars: Tim May & Tony
peluso
- Flute: John Phillips
- Backing vocals: Karen & Richard
Carpenter
- If I Had You
- My favorite selection from the solo album. If I Had You
was co-written by our friend Steve Dorff who also co-wrote
I Just Fall In Love Again. I remember Karen calling
from New York and relating to me how much effort this imaginative vocal
arrangement called for. As the listener can hear, it was worth it.
- Rhythm arrangement: Bob James
- Vocal Arrangement: Rod Temperton
- Orchestration: Jerry Hey
- Keyboards: Bob James & Rob
Mounsey
- Bass: Joe Osborn
- Drums: Liberty Devitto
- Guitars: David Brown & Russell
Javors
- Tenor sax: Michael Brecker
- Percussion: Ralph McDonald
- Little Girl Blue
- Written by Rodgers and Hart for
the musical Jumbo (1935), this poignant standard
befittingly closes Lovelines.
- Arranged & Orchestrated by: Peter
Knight
- Keyboards: Richard Carpenter
- Bass: Joe Osborn
- Drums: Cubby O'Brien
- Harp: Gayle Levant

Other Notes
In the notes to the Carpenters: The
Compact Disc Collection, Richard Carpenter wrote:
This final Carpenters release commemorates our
20th year with A&M Records. It too, consists of recordings from a number of
periods. Four are from Karen's
solo album 1979. Where Do I Go From
Here, Slow Dance and Honolulu City Lights are
from 1978. You're The One
is from the 1977 Passage sessions but was too much in
the same vein as I Just Fall In Love Again to make the album.
Little Girl Blue and When I Fall In Love were
recorded for two of our ABC TV Specials. The Uninvited Guest and Kiss
Me The Way You Did Last Night are from the 1980 Made In America
sessions.
