At the peak of their careers, they shocked the pop world by splitting up. Now they are back working together for the first time in three years, and all set to launch a fresh assault on the charts with a new album called Made in America and a new single Touch Me When We're Dancing.
Ironically, the reunion came after 31-year old Karen met and married American businessman Tom Burris. Said Karen "I Can't tell you how happy I am. I'm so in love, its not true. Tommy asked me to marry him on June 16, last year. I met him only on April 12."
She said : "I started work on a solo album, but I missed Richard terribly"
George Burrell comments:
I'm circulating the above to Newville because I think it typifies the kind of news we used to hear about the Carpenters right up to Karen's death. Imagine how horrified we all were to hear Karen had died in such tragic circumstances only 18 months after the above news. Also if Coleman is to be believed, her marriage to Tom Burris was effectively over only about 5 months after the article. The final surprise was the release of the solo album which she was reported in 1981 to have "started work" on - when in reality she had completed it about 18 months earlier!
