TOP OF THE WORLD

Words & Music by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis

Top Of The World MP3

sheet music cover
Such a feelin's comin' over me
There is wonder in most everything I see
Not a cloud in the sky
Got the sun in my eyes
And I won't be surprised if it's a dream

Everything I want the world to be
Is now coming true especially for me
And the reason is clear
It's because you are here
You're the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world

Something in the wind has learned my name
And it's tellin' me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There's a pleasin' sense of happiness for me

There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That tomorrow will be just the same for you and me
All I need will be mine if you are here

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world

Liner notes

from The Singles 1969-1973 written by Digby Diehl

As this album is being released, Top Of The World appears to be on the verge of bieing the Carpenters' ninth gold single. Although this song was originally written by Richard and John as an album selection, response at concerts and encouragement from fans led Richard and Karen to consider a single release. Meanwhile, A&M Records in Australia and Japan released Top Of The World as a single to meet public demand; in both countries it became No. 1. After deciding to re-record this song for single release and make a few changes from the album cut, Richard -- who admits he must have underrated it -- has been watching this word-of-mouth hit move up the American charts toward the magic million mark.

Other Notes

In the notes to the Carpenters: The Compact Disc Collection, Richard Carpenter wrote:

Top Of The World - I have to admit we miscalled this one. After completing the song we felt it was a nice "album cut". It didn't take long, however, to learn otherwise. The response to it in concert was overwhelming. It was culled from the album in Japan and "went gold". Lynn Anderson covered it and it went to number one on the country charts. Certain Top 40 stations in the U.S. were charting it based on requests alone. Not being "born yesterday" we released the record with a few revisions in late 1973.
