Velvet Gloves and Spit
Hi all,
I think Velvet Gloves & Split was a great album - full of energy, very
vibrant, the only song that doesn't fit is the pot smokers song. We have a
view here in South Australia that of all the evils out there Pot is a minor
one. In fact it is not illegal to have some for your own use here -
(statistically there has been no increase in the consumption of the drug
here) - (it is still VERY illegal to be a drug dealer here).
.
However, I feel the point that Neil makes in the song "You with your grass,
mum and dad with their booze" is certainly a valid one.
.
We are now very aware of the impact alcohol is having on our society - we
don't tend to drink as much spirit as people in the US (Our Govt Taxes
Spirits very highly), our beer has a much stronger Alcohol content than US
beer and we are a big Wine producing country.
.
In fact (I know i'm digressing) we are now actually looking at the
Government providing heroin to heroin addicts - as The US found during the
prohibition period - the one way to make anything attractive is to ban it -
the mobsters make huge profits - we're trying to adopt strategies to hurt
the mob - free up law enforcers and remove the need for addicts to steal to
feed their habit. As our Director of Prosecutions says "Nothing we've done
so far has worked - time for a different strategy".
.
I Like the album very much because it reveals depth of thought about love,
relationships and what is going on around us.
.
The modern day version of love, two bit manchild. Merry-go-round, shilo,
Brooklyn Roads. All songs with a great deal of depth and energy. A certain
"rawness" that makes this music very appealing - I personally find this
album very uplifting - the sheer energy coming from it - fantastic. To me -
4 1/2 out of 5.
.
I was interested to note the comments on the album cover. In Australia the
record companies rip us off - the cover you described - never seen it here.
In fact it's only been recently that Velvet Gloves and Spit has been that
here - It was known as Brooklyn Roads (Big hit in some parts of OZ) and
didn't have Shilo on it, and the cover was the cover you now see on the
Rainbow album.
.
Any way that's my two-bobs worth (twenty cents/dime for you yanks<bg> :)))) )
.
Its great to have a forum of fellow travellers to discuss the greatness of
Neil Diamond.
