Elton in Bristow, Va

by Erik

Just got back from a lengthy trip, but of course, it was worth it. I had purcahsed tickets thru the Internet, but got better ones at the show. I was on the very first row in the first section behind the floor seats directly in line with Elton. So no one blocked my view. The venue was a "shed", but sounded suprisingly good. Traffic was horrible, but that is another story. The set list is as follows with a few notes:

Circle of Life - complete with chants and movie footage on the screens. Sounded great. First time hearing live.

Grey Seal

GBYBR

Honky Cat

Tiny Dancer

Levon - great version, maybe the best yet!

I'm Gonna Be A Teenage Idol - hard to understand the lyrics, this is the only song I would drop from the setlist. Replace with Someone Saved..

IGTWTCITB - getting old, but sounds wonderful

IDWGOWYLT - awesome, simply awesome!

Don't Let The Sun....

Daniel - Definately getting old, but another gimme

Rocket Man - He did not play the original version, it was an extended version but not nearly as long as in the past. I was glad.

Roy Rogers - first time hearing this live too.

Crocodile Rock - really got the "lame as usual" crowd going. I was beginning to wonder if these people could stand.

Your Song - solo

Recover Your Soul - solo - perfect

Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters part 1 - The definite highlight of the evening. Again, perfect.

Philadelphia Freedom

Simple Life - Why can't the album version sound this good??!

The One - I'm beginning to really dislike Davey! He single handedly ruins this song!

Sad Songs - little faster, sounds pretty good.

**Band Intros**

SATWYLT

Bitch is Back

Saturday Night's...

Encore 1

Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds - I had my doubts, but he pulled it off (of course!) I still would rather him stick to his own songs.

Great Balls of Fire - He had us rolling singing like Donald Duck during a verse!

Encore 2

Bennie and the Jets - normal under piano and such

This was my 8th time seeing Elton and I intend to go to three more shows this year. I really like the band, I really do, but during several songs they put too much into them. You can't pick out the different instruments sometimes. If they would just tune it down just one notch everything would be perfect. Almost every review I've read recently has said the same thing. I normally don't put much stock in the reviews, but this instance I think they are right. Does anybody else think the band should tone it down a little?

Jan if shl!!
